About Ruakaka
Ruakaka is the largest of the Bream Bay beach towns, and the busiest in the best sense.
Ruakaka Beach is a long stretch of white sand with consistent swell, well regarded for both board and kite surfing, and through summer the area by the surf club is patrolled by lifeguards.
At the river mouth, the estuary is a protected wildlife refuge, a sanctuary for native birds including the New Zealand dotterel, variable oystercatcher and migratory godwits.
It’s also the most self-sufficient town on this part of the coast. More services than One Tree Point or Marsden Cove. There’s the area’s high school, Bream Bay College, plus a police station, library and supermarket, and eateries running from lunchbar bakeries through to restaurants and the pub. For sport, the Whangarei Racing Club is based here, on a course with elevated views across the bay. So if the horses aren’t holding your attention, the view will.
Out on the water, the bay runs thick with snapper, kahawai and gurnard.
